Henry County, Georgia is one of 28 counties that make up the Atlanta metropolitan area. It was named for Patrick Henry, a hero of the American Revolution. Within its borders are five towns and cities, including Blacksville, which is one of only six places in the United States with a population of four people!
Henry County was founded in 1821. The county seat is the city of McDonough, which serves the cities and towns of Hampton, Locust Grove and Stockbridge. Like many of the counties surrounding Atlanta, Henry County has experienced much growth in the recent past. It is, in fact, the third fastest-growing county in Georgia. Its population increases by about 10 percent each year, and new developments coexist side by side with older historic homes.
Businesses also flourish here, many of which have been in the area for decades, and have established strong ties to the community. Visitors enjoy many scenic wonders, including Stone Mountain, a rocky outcropping that was originally part of Henry County, but was incorporated into Dekalb County in 1822. The city of Hampton is home to the Atlanta Motor Speedway, where NASCAR and IRL racing events are held each year.
An active arts community and historical society also add to the attractions of Henry County. New residents and visitors will find many opportunities to participate in local events. If a trip to the big city is what you are looking for, Atlanta is a 30 minute drive away. Housing options vary, with something for everyone. Henry County is a piece of the old South located close to everything.
